KM3D-1

"Created by AnOther Magazine with artist and filmmaker Baillie Walsh, KM3D-1 stars Kate Moss. The work continues Moss and Walsh's journey into experimental, multi-dimensional image-making, first seen in their legendary holographic film for Alexander McQueen's autumn/winter 2006 show.

With a performance that recalls the fantastical cinema of Ray Harryhausen, James Bidgood and Kenneth Anger, KM3D-1 places at its centre one of the most iconic female figures of the modern age. Suspended in time and space, Kate is caught inexorably in the parallax gap; a butterfly in a spider's web.

Captured at 1,000 frames per second – a speed so slow that movement is almost imperceptible – the beauty of Kate's face appears frozen, transforming her into an impenetrable deity. She is a figure of contemporary fantasy, shattering her own self-image.

Made with state-of-the-art Phantom cameras, specially built for the project to create extreme slow motion and a dramatic 3D effect, KM3D-1 reflects AnOther Magazine's raison d'etre: to champion creatives pushing the limits of what seems possible."

Nuke 6.0 and NukeX 6.0

Nuke 6.0 is currently scheduled for release in January 2010.

Nuke 6.0 incorporates a completely new shape rotoscope and paint toolset based on a rewritten core curve library and new RotoPaint node. This release introduces a flexible, non-destructive, layer based paint hierarchy integrated with Nuke’s animation and tracking capabilities and supporting per-object attributes such as blending modes and motion blur.

In addition, The Foundry’s highly acclaimed Keylight keyer will be a standard feature included with Nuke 6.0.

Simultaneously, The Foundry plan to launch NukeX 6.0.

NukeX 6.0 has all of the tools and features of Nuke 6.0, but also aims to bring additional, powerful, technologies within the reach of visual effects artists.

Many of these tools and technologies are expensive to purchase and maintain, but would make a considerable difference to the overall speed, efficiency and quality of work produced by artists if they had access to them.

This first release includes a fully integrated 3D camera tracker. You can do your own camera solves, create 3D geometry and position objects and cards at the right place in the scene whenever you need to.

Lens distortion tools are another example of the advanced technology we are adding to NukeX 6.0 giving you multiple ways to analyse image sequences and lens grids resulting in a lens model and the ability to warp and un-warp in order to compensate for lens distortion.

NukeX will also incorporate FurnaceCore - 12 of The Foundry’s best Furnace tools including Kronos, the optical flow re-timer, grain and de-grain tools, rig-removal and more.

There are many more advances planned for NukeX. Watch this space…

How much will NukeX be?

Nuke will remain priced at $3,500/£2,300 with annual maintenance at $1,000/£650.

So what of Nuke?

Offering VFX users two different Nuke products enables facilities of all sizes to implement a Nuke solution to fit a range of artist and production needs. Nuke continues to be an evolving, flexible solution ideal for a multitude of VFX tasks, while NukeX brings previously unaccessible tools and workflow options to compositing artists, saving time and increasing the quality of their work.

Will scripts from NukeX be compatible with Nuke?

Yes, Nuke and NukeX are fully script compatible, with Nuke capable of viewing and rendering nodes created using the extended NukeX toolset.

The Embassy's VFX Work on District 9

The Embassy team worked on 109 shots for District 9, including the scorpion-like alien creature scenes and the sequences in which lead character Wikis is forced to use alien weaponry to blow up various objects. While all of the sequences required varied cameras and visual effects to drive home the authentic feel, the Exo-suit sequences stand out as a distinguishing use of vfx software to further the perceived reality of the film.

To start, CG Leads Matt Rouleau, Simon Van de Lagemaat and their team built and animated the Exo-suit in XSI and then rendered it in mental ray. The surfacing and texture painting was done in Zbrush and Modo, then it was composited and GenArts Sapphire plug-ins were added. Stephen Pepper, The Embassy's compositing supervisor for District 9 said details created with GenArts Sapphire were integral to achieving the film's convincing visual effects. Read more

Zombieland breakdowns

Quelques breakdowns des travaux de compositing réalisés par CIS Vancouver sont présentés en grand nombre sur Animation World Network.

"After working on Rome environments for Angels & Demons CIS Vancouver did nearly 110 shots for the wild and gory Zombieland (directed by Ruben Fleischer), including a "seat belt" lesson and the opening 90-second shot in semi-deserted Washington, D.C., which is all CG. Mark Breakspear, CIS' visual effects supervisor, tells all."

Bill Desowitz: So, what was it like working on a zombie movie?

Mark Breakspear: Well, it was a lot of fun. Like any small budget show, they still have the same big ideas as big budget shows. We started talking to Paul Linden, the overall visual effects supervisor, about the kind of work that they had and at the time it was some driving composites, but then the movie developed, as we knew it would, and suddenly there were a bunch of CG shots that they wanted: some environments and this great shot.

mental images® Unveils iray Rendering Solution

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and BERLIN, Germany — Sept. 30, 2009— mental images®, an NVIDIA company, today
introduced iray® – the first fully GPU accelerated, commercially supported, turn-key rendering
solution for a wide range of 3D graphics application developers. iray technology leverages NVIDIA®
graphics processing units (GPUs) to deliver unbelievably fast photorealism to designers, engineers
and consumers.

Life-like graphics can now become interactive as iray rendering technology exploits the massively
parallel processing power of the GPU, enabling more convincing 3D visuals, greater levels of
creativity and faster decision making. “With iray rendering technology, what used to take product
designers, visual effects artists and CAD users hours to render can now happen in a matter of
minutes without compromising the quality and detail of the image, said Dr. Jon Peddie, president,
Jon Peddie Research. “The advent of iray is changing the face of this industry by increasing the
standards in rendering efficiency as we know it.”

iray technology speeds the creative process by easily enabling designers to accurately simulate
their creations using materials and lighting that relate directly to the physical world experienced
every day. Because it’s highly scalable, interactive and physically accurate, iray technology allows
design and engineering professionals to produce the highest quality final-frame output without the
complexity inherent in other solutions.

With tight integration with mental ray® technology – mental images’ renderer, which is extensively
used in feature film work and within the leading design and creation tools from Autodesk, Dassault
Systèmes
and Parametric Technology – iray rendering technology will empower millions of users with
the ability to change the way they create synthetic images.

“The combination of iray and NVIDIA GPUs is an astounding achievement, demonstrating our undisputed
leadership in computational graphics,” said Dan Vivoli, senior vice president, NVIDIA Professional
Solutions Group. “The ease-of-use and remarkable speed of iray brings interactive photorealism
easily within the reach of any creator or consumer of 3D content.”

iray rendering technology significantly improves how designers, engineers and other content
development professionals work with rendering tools to produce high-quality, photorealistic imagery.
Harnessing the power of the GPU and the NVIDIA CUDA™ parallel processing architecture, iray
technology progressively refines an image until maximum detail is reached, providing a single
process that smoothly combines interactive pre-visualization and final frame rendering. iray
technology requires only a small number of intuitive settings relating to the physical world that
delivers a “push-button” rendering experience for creating final-frame photo-real images.

“It’s no secret that users want to utilize the power of GPUs for photorealistic rendering,” said
Rolf Herken, CEO and CTO, mental images. “With iray, we deliver a solution that not only leverages
the GPU in the most efficient manner but also raises the bar for what is defined as photorealism in
rendering.”
